Funds we receive from the State of California and other public sources, approximately $9,500 per student in 2015-16, are insufficient to cover our expenses. Problematically, California ranks in the lower third among all states in per student spending. Our funding from Sacramento is less than half what New York City public schools receive, and our costs are similar.
FUNDING THE GAP
More affluent California school districts have responded to this challenge by raising supplementary funds from parents and local businesses in their communities. We are unable to do this in view of the income levels in southeast San Francisco.
Above and beyond the costs of our academic programs, we face the cost of non-academic programs we believe are essential to support our learners and their families. Our meal program is only partially funded by public sources. A proportion of our students have social and emotional needs that require specialized counseling.
